Grilling Facts
Outdoor grilling is hotter than ever with a record breaking 17 million grills shipped in 2006, according to the Hearth Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA). That's a 15 percent increase over the previous year and the fastest year-to-year growth rate the industry has ever experienced. With a majority of grill owners firing up their grill year-round for great tasting and healthy grilled food, there's no doubt grilling is a fast, easy and convenient way to prepare a meal and the industry numbers for 2006 confirm it.
The following is select information from the most recent State of the Barbecue Industry report and HPBA's National Barbecue Month consumer survey further detailing consumers' love for the open flames.
Who Grills:
- 81% of all U.S. households own a grill.
- 47% of grill owners say they grill at least 1-2 times per week during peak summer months.
- Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day are the most popular grilling days respectively.
Consumers Say The Top Three Reasons To Grill Are:
- It tastes so good.
- Requires little cleanup.
- Easy, informal, and a secure way to entertain family and friends.
What's Cookin'
- Burgers (87%), Steaks (83%), Chicken (78%) and Hot Dogs (76%) are the most commonly prepared foods on the outdoor grill.
- The most commonly prepared side dishes are corn, other vegetables and potatoes.
- Barbecue sauce is the most popular condiment followed by dry meat rubs used by 1/3 of charcoal and gas grill owners.
Sizzling Trends:
- Liquid propane (LP) gas grills are still the most popular type for consumers to own at 65%, while 37% of consumers own charcoal grills, 6% own natural gas grills and 2% own electric grill.
- The most popular barbecue utensils are long-handled tongs (81%), followed by grill cleaning brushes (75%), and then long-handled forks and spatulas (tied at 64%).
- Most grill owners barbecue at their primary residence (64%). Another 17% of respondents barbecue at a relative's home, and 6% barbecue at a second/vacation home or at a campground.
